Pre-press & Media Resources

By Matt | October 6, 2007

Some links I’ve found helpful over the years:

www.prepressure.com:   Almost everything you ever wanted to know or need to know about pre-press processes.

www.b4print.com:  Forum / news resource for pre-press information.

Adobe Red Book:   The PostScript Language Reference Manual
(a/k/a PLRM or “Red Book”) D90 Archive copy

FontLabs:   FontLabs has taken over the development and support of Fontographer from Macromedia, as part of it’s font management suite.

Noah(fonts):   Hmmm, Noah is more “hard core” than Fontographer for tuning PostScript Type 1 fonts. It’s an old, 16 bit application. It runs on XP (I’ve used it). It’s particularly good at doing things like straightening out inconsistent names inside a font, without resorting to using a text editor at the PostScript level.

GhostScript:   If you’re not familiar with GhostScript, you’re not a pre-press geek.
This is a great, basic viewer, lets you view a PostScript or E(ncapsulated)PS without distilling or printing it. It will often give different error messages on a bad file that Adobe Distiller or other PostScript renderers — I’d run a bad file through both to see which each doesn’t like.
