Mortlake was given three assignments:
Engine 190 to participate in a hose lay in the southbound side to supply Willington's foam trailer.
Engine Tank 190 move up and cover Atwood Hose.
Ambulance to take a post at Exit 87 & Lathrop road to cover the south end of the Plainfield district for medicals. With the highway closed, there was near gridlock traffic on Route 12.
East Great Plains (Norwich, CT) Engine Tank 51 1500/2000 setup at the hydrant at Exit 87 SB @ Lathrop Road
Mortlake Rescue 590 standing by
Laurel Hill (Norwich, CT) Hose Tender 61 backing up after having finished it's lay. This unit formerly served Old Lyme and was purchased by Norwich in the summer, 2008 to improve their water supply capabilities following a couple major apartment complex fires. 1250gpm, 2500' 5".
1400' of Laurel Hill 5" was between EGP & Mortlake Engine 190. 1500gpm/700gwt/4,000+' 5"
I suspect this photo op doesn't come along too often.
It's all off. We ended up having 3,900' on the reel today, there should be another 400' in a small hose bed under the diamond plate cover. While the reel holds 4,600', it seems as fast as we get capital to replace old hose, more hose fails annual service testing. Needs are also changing as LDH is now very common, and long lays in our town are rarer. It's likely the replacement to this engine will be a radically smaller vehicle (say a 4x4 F550 equipped with a 1000gpm pump and 2,500' 5" which will meet our current needs).
There's an incident down there somewhere. Guess I don't have to feel guilty about not going on the treadmill tonite.
There was 500' of Laurel Hill and 500' of Mortlake 5" between Engine 190 & HT 61.
The 2.5" line is to allow them to relieve pressure without blowing it onto the highway.
Static water source (a fancy word for a pond). So close, so far away.
Another 1500' of 5" and a phantom pumper. Not really sure why this here, sometimes we drop a Humat 4-way valve for a later arriving engine to tie into. Here we just seem to be marking the place an engine could be put in if necessary.
Voluntown ET 253, 1250gpm/1000gwt/1500' 5". I suspect this may have originally been supposed to go in where the phantom pumper was, however more the adequate water was being moved. It was assigned to standby in case there was a problem with hose or apparatus along the lay.
Hmmm, over zealous diking?
1700' of Mortlake 5", then Yantic (Norwich, CT) Engine 33 2000gpm/500gwt
1000' of Yantic 5" to Willington's Foam Trailer. (plus 200' of Mortlake 5" laying unused)
Southbound Side:
Willington Foam Trailer. The State of Connecticut maintains 8 of these trailers with 500 gallons of 1%/3% AFFF and a 500gpm master stream.
Green apparatus are Plainfield. Black over Red is Central Village. The precariously tipping van belongs to a TV station.
Northbound Side:
Norwich, CT "Prime Mover" and foam trailer.
Moosup ET-194
At the bottom of the off ramp is Atwood Hose HT-196 setup at a hydrant supply Moosup, Norwich Foam Trailer, and Plainfield.
Scotland HT-116 (1000gpm, 5000' 5") was sent to Erin Drive, a trailer park adjacent the Plainfield fire station and near the incident. AFAIK they didn't lay a line; they could've either laid 1/2 mile to the Exit 88 SB on ramp, or hand-jacked through the woods to the rear of the trailer park.
Trivia: Mortlake has pumped to a Willington unit before. Fall '92 or Spring '93 there was a charcoal kiln fire in Union, CT that DEP Air Quality insisted be extinguished. Mortlake, the two Willingtons, and maybe Muddy Brook teamed up, under the coordination of the Muddy Brook Chief, to make an 8,500' hose lay with a 200' in elevation increase. Mortlake pumped from the source pond, with Willington Hill and Willington No. 1 relay pumping.
